Assistance
Other Finance
The two main forms of finance for start-ups are:
However, grants or subsidies from enterpise support agencies or other bodies are also an important source of start-up and are covered in a separate category (see Grants).
Other forms of (strictly) debt finance that extend your credit-line include:
- Leasing – A way of acquiring the use of fixed assets (for example, plant and machinery, cars, office equipment) by paying a regular monthly or quarterly payment, which is usually allowable for tax purposes. At the end of the lease, depending on the terms, you may have the option to continue using the asset for a small continuing payment or to buy it outright from the lessor
- Invoice discounting/Factoring – A facility linked directly to sales, which maximises the cash value of current assets. The bank will pay you, say, 80% of the face value of an invoice when it is issued. The balance, less charges, will be paid to you when the invoice is paid. Useful for the company that is expanding and in danger of being choked for lack of cash.
Further sources of start-up finance include:
- Tax reliefs or tax refunds - See the Business Expansion Scheme or the Seed Capital Scheme
- Finance-in-kind - Where an organisation provides its services at a reduced rate, either as part of a support scheme or sometimes in return for a small stake in your business
- Enterprise competition prizes - See Competitions
