Do you keep information about people on computer? If you do, the law says you must:

• Obtain it fairly
• Keep it accurate and up-to-date
• Use it and disclose it only in accordance with the purposes for which you obtained it
• Keep it no longer than necessary
• Give a copy to the individual concerned of he or she requests it.

The Data Protection Commissioner's website sets out your rights as an individual and your responsibilities as a "data controller". It has a self-assessment checklist to help you comply with the law.
