The Department’s mandate is to implement Government policy in five key areas:

• Development of enterprise
• Employment promotion
• Trade development
• Protection of workers
• Regulation of businesses.

The Offices that come under the aegis of the Department relevant to small business include:

• Companies Registration Office
• Director for Consumer Affairs
• Registry of Friendly Societies
• Patents Office.

The Department also has policy responsibility for a number of State-sponsored bodies, including:

• Enterprise Ireland
• FÁS
• Forfás
• Health and Safety Authority
• IDA Ireland
• InterTradeIreland
• National Standards Authority of Ireland
• Shannon Development.

Note that assistance to individual small businesses is not undertaken directly by the Department. Advice and financial assistance is provided by the development agencies, principally the City/County Enterprise Boards and Enterprise Ireland.
