The principal functions of the Director of Consumer Affairs are:
- To inform the public of their rights as consumers
- To conduct investigations under a wide range of consumer protection legislation
- To prosecute offences as provided for by statute — breaches of the Consumer Credit Act, 1995, false or misleading advertising under the provisions of the Consumer Information Act, 1978, food labelling regulations and general product safety legislation
- To keep under general review practices or proposed practices by business generally that could impact negatively on consumers’ statutory rights
- To licence or authorise moneylenders, pawnbrokers, and mortgage and credit intermediaries as provided for in the Consumer Credit Act, 1995
- To monitor customer charges by credit institutions and to issue directions in relation to increases in existing charges and charges for new services/products
- Promotion of codes of practice.
