The HSA has overall responsibility for the administration and enforcement of health and safety at work in Ireland, and:
- Monitors compliance with legislation at the workplace and can take enforcement action (including prosecutions)
- Is an expert centre for information and advice to employers, employees and self-employed
- Promotes education, training and research.
The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 1989 covers all who work, all workplaces, visitors and passers-by and also places responsibilities on manufacturers and suppliers (including designers, installers and erectors).
The HSA publishes useful guides, including:
- Guide to the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 1989 and (General Application) Regulations, 1993 (IR£10)
- Short Guide to Health and Safety Law (IR£2)
- Guidelines on Preparing Safety Statements and Carrying out Risk Assessments (IR£2)
